dent Surgeon in connection with the Hospital, I have informed

the Committee that I would ask your sanction to provide in the

Estimates for 1901 a sum of $24,000 to cover the cost of the

erection of the Nursing Institute, as an extension of the quar-

ters of the Nursing Staff at the Government Civil Hospital.

3. The Nursing Institute was originally design-

ed to provide accommodation for the Matron of the Government

Civil Hospital, who has at present to share a common sitting

room with the Sisters which is not a desirable arrangement, the

two Nurses for private nursing engaged at the request of Sir

William Robinson contained in his despatch No.248 of the 25th.

could not now be provided for less than about $30,000, but as

two probationers can be accommodated at the New Hospital, it

is anticipated that a building for the reduced staff can be

erected for $24.000.It will contain 5 bedrooms, 2 sitting rooms,

dining room, an office, and necessary out-offices.

4. With reference to paragraph 4 of your des-

patch No.84 of 1st. April, 1898, I have to report that Nurses

Robins and Millington have heen employed in nursing private

patients and when not so employed have assisted at the Govern-

ment Civil Hospital. The fees charged to private persons en-

gaging them have hitherto been on the following scale;-
